  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère or sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant. Stir in the heavy cream, whole milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg; heat until warm but do not boil.
  3. In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the sweet potato slices evenly and pour half of the cream mixture on top. Sprinkle with half of the Gruyère or cheddar cheese.
  4. Repeat the layering process with the remaining sweet potato slices, cream mixture, and top with the remaining cheese and Parmesan.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20–25 minutes until golden and tender.
  6. Let cool for about 5 minutes before serving.
